Calbuco Volcano (2003 m) lies within the protective area Llanquihue. Its main attractions are the unique outlook over Llanquihue Lake with Osorno Volcano in the background and its diverse landscapes from native forest, mountainous landscapes of volcanic origin, glaciers and last but not least its crater close to its summit which, occasionally, proves with fumarolic activities and geysers that Calbuco is certainly not extinguished. The traverse of Calbuco Volcano takes two days and starts on the southern face of the volcano this is to say from Chapo Lake. This tour starts at 6:00 am picking you up at your accommodation in Ensenada, Puerto Varas or Puerto Montt to continue to our starting point close to Chapo Lake at the southern face of Calbuco volcano. From here we start our hike through majestic alerce tree forests (one of the world’s longest living trees). From the national park’s control point our hike through picturesque landscapes takes us about 5 to 6 hours. We build up our camp close to the summit to watch sunset to our feet from this unique outlook. The next day’s descent follows the ascension route of the one days climb.
