Calbuco Volcano (2003 m) lies within the protected area Llanquihue. Its main attractions are the unique outlook over Llanquihue Lake with Osorno Volcano in the background and its diverse landscapes from native forest, mountainous landscapes of volcanic origin, glaciers and last but not least its crater close to its summit which, occasionally, proves with fumarolic activities and geysers that Calbuco is certainly not extinguished. Our climb starts at 5:00am in the morning with the pick-up at your accommodation in Puerto Varas to drive then to Ensenada. From here we approach to the starting point at the foothills of Calbuco where we leave our car and start our ascent of about 7 to 8 hours. We hike through thick native forests where trees like Mañío, Coigüe, Tepa and Tineo prevail and difficult to penetrate Quila bamboos and Arrayán and Maqui bushes as well as lots of creeping plants and farns make it impossible to diverge from the established path. A moraine of lava sands opens our path until the tree limit where our way continues through mountainous landscapes. Before arriving at the snow limit at about 1600 m above sea level you can see an impressing waterfall. The crater which proves the permanent volcanic activity of Calbuco with fumarolic activities is apart from the summit one of the highlights of this tour.
